The IELTS Listening test evaluates your ability to understand spoken English, identify key information and follow conversations and discussions in different contexts.
General Structure
- The Listening test is the same for Academic and General Training candidates.
- It consists of 4 parts with 40 questions in total.
- The test takes approximately 30 minutes, with an additional 10 minutes to transfer answers on the paper-based test.
- Each recording is played only once.
- Questions include multiple-choice, matching, labelling, sentence completion and short-answer formats.
- The recordings progress from everyday social situations to educational and academic discussions.
Parts and Tasks
- Part 1: This part features a conversation between two speakers in an everyday social context.
- Questions focus on practical information such as names, dates, addresses and arrangements.
- Part 2: This part features a monologue in an everyday social context.
- Questions may cover instructions, descriptions, announcements or explanations.
- Part 3: This part features a conversation between two or more speakers in an educational or training context.
- Questions assess understanding of opinions, ideas, agreements and disagreements.
- Part 4: This part features a monologue on an academic subject.
- Questions focus on understanding detailed explanations and following a structured presentation.
What Is Assessed
- Understanding main ideas and specific details.
- Recognising opinions, attitudes and speakers' purposes.
- Following conversations and identifying relationships between ideas.
- Understanding vocabulary and meaning in different contexts.
- Recognising information presented through different accents.
Strategies
- Read the questions before each recording begins.
- Identify keywords and anticipate the type of information required.
- Listen for synonyms and paraphrases rather than exact repetitions.
- Follow the speaker's ideas and watch for corrections or changes.
- Check spelling and grammar in written answers.
