Part 1 evaluates your ability to communicate in spoken and written English using language relevant to everyday situations.
General Structure
- PTE Core consists of three parts and takes approximately two hours in one sitting.
- Part 1 is the longest section and takes 50–65 minutes.
- It contains seven question types covering speaking and writing skills.
Parts and Tasks
- Read Aloud: Read a displayed text aloud after 30–40 seconds of preparation.
- Repeat Sentence: Listen to a recorded sentence lasting 3–9 seconds and repeat it.
- Describe Image: Study an image for 25 seconds and describe it in detail.
- Respond to a Situation: Read and listen to a situation description of up to 60 words.
- Prepare for 20 seconds before speaking for 40 seconds.
- Answer Short Question: Listen to a recorded question lasting 3–9 seconds and answer using one word or a few words.
- Summarize Written Text: Read a text and write a summary of 25–50 words within 10 minutes.
- Write Email: Read a text of up to 100 words and write an email of 80–120 words within 9 minutes.

- Reading aloud clearly and repeating spoken sentences accurately.
- Describing visual information in a structured manner.
- Responding appropriately to everyday situations and questions.
- Summarising written information concisely.
- Writing clear and appropriate emails.
Strategies
- Read instructions carefully before starting each task.
- Speak clearly and focus on accurate pronunciation.
- Organise information before describing images or situations.
- Identify the main ideas before writing summaries.
- Review grammar, vocabulary and sentence structure.
Tip: Practise switching naturally between speaking and writing while keeping your responses clear and focused.
