Part 2 evaluates your ability to understand written English, interpret information and identify relationships between ideas.
General Structure
- PTE Core consists of three parts and takes approximately two hours in one sitting.
- Part 2 is the Reading section and takes 27–37 minutes.
- It contains five question types.
- Questions involve completing texts, organising paragraphs and understanding written information.
Parts and Tasks
- Reading & Writing: Fill in the Blanks: Read a text of up to 200 words and select appropriate words from drop-down lists.
- Multiple Choice, Multiple Answers: Read a text of up to 275 words and select all correct answers about its content or tone.
- Reorder Paragraph: Arrange text boxes presented in random order into a coherent sequence.
- Fill in the Blanks: Complete a text of up to 80 words by dragging words from a box into the gaps.
- The word box contains more words than there are gaps.
- Multiple Choice, Single Answer: Read a text of up to 110 words and select the one correct answer about its content or tone.
What Is Assessed
- Understanding the main ideas and details of written texts.
- Identifying appropriate vocabulary from context.
- Recognising logical connections between sentences and paragraphs.
- Interpreting the content and tone of written passages.
Strategies
- Read the entire text to understand its overall meaning.
- Examine the context before selecting missing words.
- Look for logical connections between paragraphs.
- Eliminate options that contradict the information provided.
Tip: Focus on context and logical relationships rather than selecting answers based on individual words alone.
