The Listening section evaluates your ability to understand spoken English, identify key information, recognise meaning and tone, and accurately process spoken language.
General Structure
- Part 3 of the PTE Core test assesses listening skills.
- The section takes 22–37 minutes to complete.
- It includes 7 question types with different listening and response formats.
- Recordings include conversations, spoken information and individual sentences.
- Questions require written responses, selecting answers or identifying differences between spoken and written content.
Parts and Tasks
- Summarize Spoken Text: Listen to a recording and write a summary of 20–30 words.
- You have 8 minutes to complete this task.
- Multiple Choice and Missing Information Tasks: Multiple Choice, Multiple Answers requires selecting all correct answers about a recording's content or tone.
- Fill in the Blanks requires typing the missing words in a transcript.
- Multiple Choice, Single Answer requires selecting one correct answer about a recording.
- Select Missing Word requires choosing the word or group of words that completes a recording.
- Word Identification and Dictation Tasks: Highlight Incorrect Words requires clicking transcript words that differ from the recording.
- Write from Dictation requires listening to a sentence and typing it accurately.
- Dictation recordings play only once, making careful listening and accurate spelling important.

- Understanding the main ideas and supporting details in spoken English.
- Recognising the speaker's purpose, meaning and tone.
- Identifying specific words and missing information.
- Distinguishing spoken words from incorrect written alternatives.
- Accurate spelling and written language reproduction.
Strategies

- Practise identifying unfamiliar vocabulary from context.
- Review spelling mistakes and missed information after practice.
