The IELTS Writing test evaluates your ability to communicate ideas clearly, organise information, develop arguments and use accurate written English.
General Structure
- The Writing test differs between Academic and General Training candidates.
- Both versions contain 2 tasks to complete in 60 minutes.
- Task 1 requires at least 150 words, while Task 2 requires at least 250 words.
- Task 2 carries more weight in the final Writing score than Task 1.
- Answers must be written in complete sentences and organised into paragraphs.
Academic Writing
- Task 1 requires describing, summarising or explaining visual information such as graphs, charts, tables, maps or processes.
- Task 2 requires writing an essay in response to a point of view, argument or problem.
- Responses should present relevant information, explain key features and develop a clear position.
General Training Writing
- Task 1 requires writing a letter in response to a given situation.
- The letter may be personal, semi-formal or formal, depending on the context and recipient.
- Task 2 requires writing an essay in response to an opinion, argument or problem.
- Responses should address all parts of the instructions and use an appropriate tone.
What Is Assessed
- Task response or task achievement, including addressing the question and developing relevant ideas.
- Coherence and cohesion through logical organisation and effective paragraphing.
- Lexical resource, including vocabulary range and appropriate word choice.
- Grammatical range and accuracy in sentence construction.
- Clarity, relevance and consistency throughout the response.
Strategies
- Read the task instructions carefully and identify every requirement.
- Plan your ideas before beginning to write.
- Organise your response into clear paragraphs with logical connections.
- Use varied vocabulary and grammatical structures naturally.
- Leave time to review grammar, spelling and punctuation.
Tip: Give particular attention to Task 2 because it contributes more significantly to your overall Writing score.
