The IELTS Speaking test evaluates your ability to communicate fluently and accurately in spoken English across familiar topics and more complex discussions.
General Structure
- The Speaking test is the same for Academic and General Training candidates.
- It is conducted face-to-face with a certified examiner.
- The test takes approximately 11–14 minutes.
- It consists of 3 parts, progressing from familiar topics to more extended discussions.
- The examiner assesses your speaking ability throughout the test.
Parts and Tasks
- Part 1: Introduction and Interview: The examiner introduces themselves and asks questions about familiar topics.
- Topics may include your home, work, studies, family, hobbies and everyday interests.
- You should provide clear answers with relevant details.
- Part 2: Long Turn: You receive a task card containing a topic and points to cover.
- You have 1 minute to prepare your response.
- You speak for up to 2 minutes about the topic.
- The examiner may ask a brief follow-up question.
- Part 3: Discussion: The examiner asks questions related to the topic discussed in Part 2.
- Questions explore broader, more abstract ideas and issues.
- You are expected to explain opinions, justify arguments and discuss different perspectives.
What Is Assessed
- Fluency and coherence, including the ability to speak naturally and organise ideas.
- Lexical resource, including vocabulary range and appropriate expressions.
- Grammatical range and accuracy in spoken sentences.
- Pronunciation, including clarity, stress, rhythm and intonation.
Strategies
- Answer naturally rather than memorising complete responses.
- Extend your answers with explanations and relevant examples.
- Use a range of vocabulary and grammatical structures.
- Organise longer responses with a clear beginning, development and conclusion.
- Practise expressing opinions and supporting them with reasons.
Tip: Focus on communicating your ideas clearly and naturally rather than trying to use complicated vocabulary in every answer.
